Chris Bligh from Bligh Graham Architects asked me to shoot their latest house up on Outlook Crescent in the foothills of Mt Cootha. The multi-storey structure contended with challenging topographical constraints as well as the ever present threat of bushland fires. Just getting up the driveway required a sherpa to carry all my gear.

Steep sloped entry into the Outlook Crescent house provided for some interesting architectural challenges including vehicular access and circulation.

The main entry precinct to the house includes a central steel staircase to upper levels and internal access to adjacent garage areas.

Once inside visitors get to traverse this beautifully detailed staircase complete with steel plate balustrading and fine steel / timber hand railing.

Upper level external deck spaces provide sensational views of the Brisbane CBD in the background

It was important to maintain a degree of transparency right through the various spaces of the house to maximise on the view to the CBD. Outdoor fireplace provides ambience and warmth on those cooler sub tropical nights in winter.

The upper internal courtyard provides for a spill out space to lounge and dining areas to the left and direct relationship to the pool area. A wet edge element allows for natural light and audible water flow to be directed down into levels below. The staircase to the rear accesses upper storey levels including main bedroom and artist studio.

Internal circulation of the houses is punctuated by the string star element that allows you to focus your direction from top to bottom of the house.

Kitchen and dining room spaces have direct links to outdoor entertaining spaces

Kitchen space with closed door to pantry. The open room to the rear of the shot is the family library.

All spaces interconnected with large openable door panels

Exquisite polished plaster walling to fireplace reveal details. This double facing fire place also provides warmth to the external deck area as well as the sitting room.
